Sod installation service | Dartmouth, NS

Sod installation is easy to do if you only want short-term results - just ask anyone who has purchased a new home, only to have a yard full of dead or diseased grass a year or two later.

Thanks to the practices of some installers, sod has a bad reputation with many people that is entirely undeserved. When properly installed, sod is one of the best ways to achieve lush, green grass all throughout your outdoor space - and in much less time than seeding would take.

If there are areas of your yard where you struggle to keep anything alive, our sod services might be the answer. At
Dartmouth Landscaping, we offer both commercial and residential sod installation services for outdoor spaces of any shape and size.  So whether you are tired of looking at bare dirt outside your front window or want to put your best foot forward when your new business opens in a couple weeks, our local sod installation experts can help!

What is Sod?

Sod is real, live grass that is grown on a specialized farm, usually no more than 160 kilometers from where it is installed. Grass seed is sown, fertilized, and watered for 10 to 18 months before it is harvested. At harvest, special machinery shaves the grass and the top inch or two of soil off of the ground before either rolling it up or cutting it into square slabs for transport to its new home.

“Turf” is also commonly used when referring to sod, but this can be a bit ambiguous as turf is also used to describe artificial grass. Turf can also refer to the combination of grass and soil that covers the ground after a sod installation. So while calling sod “turf” is not necessarily incorrect, be sure to confirm what is being offered when you see advertisements for “turf installation”. If you are looking for a real grass installation, sod is what you need!

Why Choose Sod?

While it might seem unnatural to some to purchase and install grass, there is nothing artificial about sod. Just like the vegetables you buy at the supermarket are grown in one place and enjoyed in another, sod is naturally cultivated - just not in your yard (at first). Once it is established in your space, it is just as natural as if you had planted it from seed!

So why go to all the trouble of harvesting and transporting grass into your outdoor space? Here are a few of the reasons why our clients and homeowners all around the world choose sod:

Instant Results and Usability
One of the biggest advantages of sod over seeded yards is the instant results that sod provides. While grass seeds can take up to 2 months to look like a grass yard, sod transforms your space immediately. And unlike young grass that is tender and fragile, sod can be used like a normal yard almost immediately. Be careful though - this quick and easy transformation of your lawn might inspire you to take on another
weekend landscaping project!

Thicker and More Uniform Growth
When you plant grass seeds, there is no guarantee that they will all sprout at the same time - or that they will sprout at all in some areas! With sod, you are ensured thick, lush grass in all parts of your yard. You also know that all of your grass will be the same variety, giving your yard a uniform, well-manicured look that most seeded yards simply can’t attain.

As an added benefit, the thickness and uniformity that sod brings is a great weed prevention method! With every inch of your yard covered by healthy grass, there is no space for weeds to take root when their seeds blow in from neighboring yards.

Install on Your Schedule
Want to have your outdoor space looking its best for a party you are throwing in a month? Sod can make that happen. Did you miss the springtime window for seeding your yard, but can’t bear to look at scraggly grass until next spring? Sod can be installed at any time of the year (so long as the ground is not frozen). Whether you just moved into your home, received a little extra money to spend on your yard, or simply don’t want to wait for grass to grow, we can turn the yard you have now into something lush and green within a matter of a few days.

Our Sod Installation Process

To ensure that your new grass takes root and lasts for years to come, the sod installers at Landscaping Dartmouth follow a seven-step process that has been proven to transform yards quickly without fading or dying just as quickly. If you have suffered this fate at the hands of second-rate sod installers, our sod replacement services can get your yard back on track in no time by following this same process.

  1. Soil Preparation: Before sod is installed, it is imperative that all the old grass is removed. We then till the soil to loosen and aerate it while removing rocks, debris, and anything else that might impede root growth.

  2. Soil Testing: As with any plant, grass grows best in soil with the proper pH and nutrients. Before we lay sod in your yard, we will test your soil and amend it as needed to create ideal growing conditions for your new grass.

  3. Levelling: Sod takes root best on a smooth, level surface. If your yard has low areas or large bumps, we will grade the space to prevent water pooling, poor root attachment, and uneven growth.

  4. Sod Installation: Once all the prep work is complete, we can start laying (or unrolling) the sod. We work from the outside edges of your yard toward the middle to avoid creating small, vulnerable pieces of sod, and we stagger sod squares to prevent long seams wherever possible.

  5. Trimming: No yard is perfectly square or completely free of obstacles. Once the sod is laid, we make precise cuts to fit it up against not only the edges of your yard, but also around trees, flower beds, and other landscaping features.

  6. Watering: A deep watering is essential immediately after laying sod. This initial watering encourages the roots to start stretching into your soil, anchoring the sod in the correct place and encouraging a growth spurt.

  7. Rolling: Finally, we use a lawn roller to press the sod down against the newly watered soil, ensuring full contact for the new roots and helping your new grass establish itself quickly and fully.

Once installation is complete, we will give you instructions on watering, fertilization, and mowing for the coming weeks. With proper maintenance and care, your new grass will thrive as though it had been planted in your yard for many, many years!
