Grading Services | Dartmouth, NS

The natural world is full of variety - steep slopes and rolling plains; trickling streams and rushing rivers. This untamed diversity makes nature beautiful and inspiring, and is one of the reasons we love to leave our organized homes and explore its magnificence.

Untamed nature is not ideal for building homes and maintaining organized outdoor spaces, however. The same water that flows majestically down the mountains will wash away your soil, damage your plants, and potentially pool in all the wrong places as it flows through your yard. Likewise, hills and valleys are far from ideal for outdoor structures and entertaining spaces.

So how do we craft a well-maintained living space out of the wildness of nature? Landscape grading is one of the first and most important steps in keeping the forces of nature under control on your property. At
Dartmouth Landscaping, we offer grading services to help you improve drainage in your yard, reduce erosion, and create level spaces for patios, walkways, and play areas.

What is Landscape Grading?

Landscape grading is the process by which an uneven or excessively steep yard is reshaped to create a usable surface that allows water to flow through without causing erosion or pooling. The ultimate goal of grading is to create a level, usable outdoor space with a 2% slope for yard drainage. This slope allows water to run safely away from structures and out of your yard without taking your soil with it.

If you are levelling your yard in preparation for a patio or other outdoor structure to be installed, our yard grading and levelling services will provide a smooth, well-compacted surface for the structure while directing water flow around and away from it.

Why is Landscape Grading Important?

Though it can be a big undertaking, the benefits of residential yard grading are many. Here are just a few of the reasons our clients have chosen to have their yards graded:

Drainage & Erosion Control

As we discussed above, a properly graded yard will direct water away from your home (where it can damage your foundation) and out of your yard. The subtle slope of your yard will ensure that, as water leaves, it does not take away the soil, keeping both your plants healthy and our water supply cleaner.

Aesthetics & Functionality

If you have ever tried to have a picnic on the side of a hill, you already understand why grading makes your yard more usable. By turning a steep or uneven yard into smooth, level ground, all of your outdoor activities will be easier and more enjoyable - and your yard will look better too!

Sustainability

Grading can direct water wherever you want it to go - either out of your yard completely, or to the plants that need a little extra. By utilizing rainwater better, you reduce your landscape’s reliance on municipal water sources. Grading also keeps water from pooling around your plants or in your garden bed, protecting them from root rot and other diseases. A well-graded and drained landscape is greener, healthier, and makes better use of all our natural resources!
